Case · EU4Health

Over 1,000 patient voices, turned into a product definition that could be tested.

smartCARE is a flagship initiative of Europe's Beating Cancer Plan: a Cancer Survivor Smart Card giving people control over their own medical data. Alan Menk led discovery and product delivery as Product Manager at Bilbomática, the development partner selected directly by HaDEA. This was a professional engagement before Vuola, not a Vuola project.

Method

Evidence before code.

In a consortium of 41 organisations the hard part is not building an app. It is deciding what to build, and being able to defend that decision.

01

Workshops

Four virtual workshops with paediatric and adult cancer survivors, moderated so participants set the agenda. They surfaced the non-negotiables and three needs that shaped the product.

02

Survey

Translated into 18 languages and answered by more than 1,000 people from 52 countries. Enough evidence to stop guessing which features mattered, and to whom.

03

Prototype

Four working modules, each traceable back to a specific finding. A prototype, not a slide deck.

04

Validation

92 patients and 16 professionals in four countries, with 88-100% task completion. The findings fed the recommendations to the Commission.

The product

Four modules, each answering a documented need.

MyHealth

MyHealth

Access medical data, share it with providers and keep control of the files: upload treatment data, generate a PDF history, track symptoms, medication and appointments.

Telehealth

Telehealth

Video calls, chat and file sharing with consenting providers, reducing in-person appointments. The user decides what each provider can see.

Community

Community

A space where people who have experienced cancer connect, share their stories and support one another, with private messaging and moderation.

Resources

Resources

Validated articles, guidelines, podcasts and videos, with a recommender system that suggests content from previous likes, saves and searches.

Why it matters

What this shows.

Discovery that survives scrutiny

Every feature traced back to documented user evidence. When a reviewer, a board or a customer asks why the product looks the way it does, there is an answer with a number attached.

Delivery inside a complex setting

41 organisations, 17 countries, a coordinator with a policy mandate and an executive agency watching. The prototype was still built and still got tested with real users.

Validation, not demonstration

Task completion measured with real patients, not a scripted demo. That is what turns a prototype into a defensible result.
